I have been banging my head against this for a couple of days now, and I'm
ready to just admit defeat and give up.

I, stupidly as it turns out, have been trying to work with Ganymede 3.4 on
a Mac OS X 10.5.5 platform and basically as far as I can see equinox just
doesn't work on Mac.

1. Attempting to add/update/remove ANY package results in HOURS of
downloading nameless jars from God-knows-where that never actually come
all the way down. I "only" have a 20mbit connection.

I am SO SICK of seeing "http://download.e...65GwAA.jar (44%)" (yes, that's
all of the full name that I can see) in the bottom right hand corner of my
screen that I could throw the whole computer out the nearest window.

2. The dropins folder doesn't work. Nothing is picked up, nothing is
logged.

3. Attempting to upgrade anything results in Eclipse eventually hanging
and having to be killed. Cancelling doesn't work.

4. Oh, and the "Classic Update" mechanism is not available for Mac on this
build. Apparently there is an update for this! Great work, Guys.

So much for multi-platform development. Let this be a warning to other
Mac developers - don't bother, it doesn't work.

Is it any better on Linux or is Eclipse Windoze-only now?

Nello,

as already answered in another thread - it should work

I'm using OSX 10.5.5 newest java update from apple

Ganymede 3.4 - SDK only
.... -RCP
.... -Modeling

with dropins
and shared dropins

but at the moment all as single installs, not shared-install
(I'll try this again with 3.5)

please report exactly what you downloaded , what steps...

it should really work

Hi,

I'm abandoning my current install (which is all of 6 weeks old) and
downloading the latest version. The current one is so bad that when it
eventually stalls on updating via Equinox - which it does every time - and
I have to kill it, it GOES BACK TO THE START AND DOWNLOADS EVERYTHING
AGAIN!

I'll write back in a few hours once I replace the current install.

Thanks for taking an interest. I'm seriously frustrated as you can
probably tell!

Regards,

Neil

Neil,
we'll help you out -- p2 is definitely not a windows only affair; lots of
people use linux and macs including Pascal (the p2 lead) and others on the
core team.
Part of the download problems might be that the 3.4.1 updates are newly
minted and I'm not sure the mirroring process went very smoothly.

Hi again,

I ended up blowing away my whole install and upgrading to the SR1 version
of 3.4 and it looks fine, but so did the previous version until it fell
behind.

I just tried dropping the sqlexplorer package into my new install's
dropins folder with no luck. I didn't rename anything, just unzipped the
package and put the top sqlexplorer_plugin-3.0.5.RC6 directory directly
into /Applications/eclipse/dropins to no avail.

The previous package I tried with the old install was the latest Teneo
build, but (fortunately for me) that has now been added to the EMF updates
so I didn't have to try again. It was structured a little differently,
with the top-level directory named eclipse and containing the plugins and
features subdirs. As I said earlier, it was not loaded or recognised
either.

I appreciate that a release has just gone through, but really don't
understand why an interrupted download of many jars has to start again
from scratch every time it is interrupted. Also "cancel" really does not
work on the Mac and requires that Eclipse be killed to break out of the
apparent deadlock when a file stalls.

As it stands, I can't see that the dropins system works at all on Mac at
the moment and can't figure out Ekke's success with it all.

Regards,

Neil

I haven't had any issues with p2 on the mac so far.

Do you see anything in the logs?

Cheers,

~ Chris

No. I see absolutely nothing in any log. Apart from hearsay, at this
point I have no actual evidence to confirm that dropins actually even
exist!

What SHOULD I see, and in which log? Nothing is documented afaik, and
nothing appears on any console.

Neil

I don't know what you see... if things aren't working, there are
generally error messages or some indication things aren't working.

I've been using EMF with no issues using the dropins directory so I'm
not sure what's going on with your setup yet.

Cheers,

~ Chris

and I'm using in dropins of 3.4 Modeling:
- openArchitectureWare

and in dropins of 3.4 RCP:
-droolsEditor
-hibernateTools
-jbpmDesigner
-quantum
-swtDesigner

and from both in shared dropins folder:
-dom4j
-hsqldb
-logback
-regex

--
together with target platform
3.4 modeling
- the ide itself
+ oaw from dropins

and in rcp with extra target platform:
-rcp
-rcpDelta
-equinox
-riena
-easybeans
-drools runtime
-some bundles from SpringSourceBundleRepository

------
there must be something wrong with your installation

if there are P2 problems normaly you'll get an error or warnings if some
dependencies could not resolved or so

Hi Folks,

I believe that it works for you. It just doesn't work for me. This is a
BRAND NEW install. I deleted the last one after the debacle of trying to
upgrade from 3.4 to 3.4 SR1 using equinox.

Now, about those logs. I admit I was looking for the keyword
"sqlexplorer" in the logs - that being the package I dropped in - and had
not delved into them deeply enough for equinox errors. So, sure enough,
after stopping Eclipse, moving the log aside and restarting, I got this:

BootLoader constants: OS=macosx, ARCH=x86, WS=carbon, NL=en_AU
Framework arguments: -keyring /Users/nbrennan/.eclipse_keyring -
showlocation
Command-line arguments: -os macosx -ws carbon -arch x86 -keyring /Users/
nbrennan/.eclipse_keyring -consoleLog -showlocation
