In my plugin project I can add the org.eclipse.ui.views extension.
But unfortunately the next step - adding an actual view - is not possible.
The only option the wizard gives is to add a generic element.

How is it possible to add a view to the org.eclipse.ui.views extension via the new wizard?

P.S.
My environment is Eclipse Indigo Java EE IDE for Web Developers and Java SE 1.6 (JDK).

The schema files where missing.
Apparently this is a known issue.
Search for "Eclipse plugin editor extension tab show "Generic" in "New" submenu".

What Eclipse version did you download? You need to source-bundles from
the platform because they are not packaged into the binary-bundles.

Dear Tom,

thanks for the reply.
Before posting the problem I had already set up a custom Target Platform containing the Eclipse RCP SDK.
But I didn't use it.
After I changed the preferences to use the custom Target Platform, it did work.

Best wishes,
Thomas
