Hypothetically, if you were to attend a conference (EclipseCon) and you
were paying good money to take a tutorial, do you require that you get
physical printed paper tutorial notes? Or would an electronic copy of
the notes on a CD be sufficient?

Consider these interesting issues:

First, all the EclipseCon tutorial notes are available, free, online,
all the time. So you don't have to pay for a tutorial to get the notes.
Thus what you are buying isn't the notes, but the instructor's
expertise and teaching skills.

Second, if we had a CD of the notes, we could put all the notes for all
the tutorials, and all the tutorial software and examples and exercises
for all the tutorials - we could put all of this on one CD and give it
to you instead of notes.

Third, if you did not have a laptop with you and you had not printed the
notes out in advance, you would not have a copy of the notes during the
tutorial. How frequently would this be a problem?

Thanks for your thoughts...

I would favor having notes only on CD, but providing paper tutorial
notes upon request (given some amount of required lead time of course).

It seems to me laptops are nearly required for eclipsecon tutorials
anyway. If someone doesn't have a laptop, or one breaks, they can
request a printout (maybe for a small additional fee or some such).

If the purpose is to be green, then why even bother burning a CD which
is out of date the minute it is burnt.
For example, even though authors are required to send their
presentations and code snippets for tutorials early, they are always
changed, improved, etc.

Instead, it would be best to have a high performance server and top
quality network connection throughout the conference to serve up the
conference content.

Following Scott's idea, CDs and paper notes could be available for an
additional fee.

True, but the cost structure of conference centers works against that
:-( Conference centers charge an outrageous fee for each physical
network drop ($100-$200/each). I have had not a good experience with
wireless networks at conferences - they just don't seem to handle the
load, plus it takes a while to download and install the JDK and Eclipse
and etc. The bandwidth of a CD is higher, hence the proposal for a CD.

Maybe we can negotiate a better deal with the conference center this time...

Wireless definitely doesn't work. Nor do printed slides. The presentation
slides will always change up until the tutorial is given. How about
providing the instructors with a few 1GB USB memory sticks, which they could
pass around. And some blank CDs or DVDs with the tutorial name pre-printed
on them.

For 2005, we burned 10 CDs the night before the tutorial. Just for the GEF
tutorial we needed around 250MB, most of which was the platform for various
OSes. Some attendees did not have CDROM drives in their notebooks. Luckily a
few brought USB keychains.

Maybe all of the tutorial slides will fit on one CD, but this does not solve
the problem of distributing other components required for the tutorial.
