Websphere+Birt 3.7: Report generation aborts after 1 minute. Timeout? [message #728397] Fri, 23 September 2011 08:11 Go to next message

I have a really ugly query which takes around 3 minutes to complete. In the report designer it runs fine and displays results. However, on the server I see the 'Processing' message but this disappears after exactly 1 minute. I have looked in the logs on the server but can see nothing there.

It is almost certainly a timeout issue - but where? Does BIRT have a timeout on queries? Is it a web server timeout?

[Update]
I just tried it out in my local tomcat server and it returns after 45 seconds and displays the first page of 248. I can then page up and down and the response time is fast. Not sure why Websphere takes so much longer. In the preview window the request took 2-3 minutes but then displayed the whole result set.

Hello Paul,
Did you check the tomcat catalina.out for OutOfMemory errors?
Are both AppServers using the same memory settings (max memory and permgen)?

Regards

Hi Jeanbaptiste

Tomcat works fine for me - it's just Websphere which timesout. I could not see any error messages in the output files on WAS. I'm guessing it is a transport timeout as it is always exactly 60 seconds. I've tweaked all the settings I can find....

Paul,

You did not set a query timeout in the report did you?
In the viewer.properties file what is your session timeout set to?
Can you set the log level to FINEST and post the log?

Jason

Jason,

thanks for your reply.

I had not (knowingly) set any timeouts anywhere. There is no timeout in viewer.properties. I set the log level to FINEST but only seem to get INFO messages in the log (mainly font registration entries).

I removed the application and deployed it again and the problem has gone away. I have no idea what is different this time. I guess we can forget this issue until it comes back Wink

Thanks

Paul

Paul,

Does this happen with all long running reports or just the one?

Jason
