I have written a blog entry about the idea of a new Eclipse Technology
project to create an OSGi-based game engine.

http://villane.blogspot.com/2006/10/idea-osgi-based-game-eng ine.html

Any thoughts?

Hi Erkki,

What is the status of this project.

Do you plan to concentrate upon stand-alone games, or do you intend to
include network-centric games?

Did you follow-up with the post from Mango-Kiwi on your blog?

Hi,

Sorry for the late reply, I didn't notice this message earlier.

To clarify, this is not really a project, at least not yet. It's just an
idea. I may experiment with this privately a bit, but I'm not really in
the game industry, this is just a hobby. If I manage to create something
good, I would probably release it under EPL.

And no, I din't follow-up the latest comment. It may be that MangoKiwi
is doing something with this.

As I see it, the OSGi game engine would actually be a generic platform
for building concrete engines by taking existing components and adding
new ones. The games could be mobile, dekstop, network servers or
whatever. But I think a showcase came should be something that people
would WANT to extend and create mods for. Something like Unreal
Tournament or Half-Life. However, thus far open source has not produced
anything great when it comes to actual games, so the game itself would
probably have to be commercial.
Actually, this might be a very valid business model -- build a great
commercial game, but release the engine as open source with completely
freely available toolset. If someone managed to do that, they could
create the greatest mod community ever, and one where the transition
from a mod to a completely separate game would be just a small step.
