Hi.
I am new to RCP and am trying to add a console view, similar to the one in Eclipse in my RCP Application. I am unable to add the console itself. I want to display the log contents generated by log4j in it.
Currently I have tried 2 methods to add a console view, however to no avail.

1. I added the following to my Perspective.java class

MessageConsole myConsole = new MessageConsole("Console", Activator
.getImageDescriptor("icons/book.png"));
ConsolePlugin.getDefault().getConsoleManager()
.addConsoles(new IConsole[] { myConsole });
final MessageConsoleStream stream = myConsole.newMessageStream();

final PrintStream myS = new PrintStream(stream);
System.setOut(myS);
System.setErr(myS);

2. This is a piece of code I came across on one forum. the displayConsoleView is returning 'false'.
error received : Could not create view: org.eclipse.ui.console.ConsoleView

Do I have to create a view in the extensions of my application first? or should this be created at runtime?

package org.taf.ui;

import org.eclipse.jface.dialogs.MessageDialog;

Did you add the plugin that contains the console view?
org.eclipse.ui.console

when I add the org.eclipse.ui.console plugin in the dependencies.It gives me an error
Runtime exception : No application id has been found.
However if I include it in the runtime dependencies and execute, It gives me a Partinit error, at the location where the console id is provided in the displayConsoleView().

You'll have to make sure you add all the dependencies you need to make
console work, or you cannot use it. In your launch config, if you
validate the plugins what does it say?

The part init error + other errors in the log should provide an idea of
why the console didn't show up.

Hi,

I went through a sample code that displays a console in its RCP application. It sets the 'Console View'
in the Perspective.java itself. The 2 lines of code that do so are:

IFolderLayout consoleFolder = layout.createFolder("console",
IPageLayout.BOTTOM, 0.65f, "messages");
consoleFolder.addView(IConsoleConstants.ID_CONSOLE_VIEW);

The import used for this is:

import org.eclipse.ui.console.IConsoleConstants;

and the org.eclipse.ui.console(3.5.0) has been included in the
dependencies.

However if I do the same in my application, it provides the following
error:

!ENTRY org.eclipse.osgi 4 0 2011-04-06 14:18:11.678
!MESSAGE Application error
!STACK 1

As it was a runtime Exception, I added the org.eclipse.ui.console (3.5.0) in the runtime
dependencies. It now dozent give an error, but however it does not even display the console view.

any input is appreciated

I've you've added it to an already open perspective, you'll have to
reset the perspective to see the change.

Hi,

I am not adding the console to an already open perspective. I want the console present when the application gets loaded.

I did try the reset perspective method,however it still does not work

snippet of the perspective.java:

import org.eclipse.ui.IFolderLayout;
import org.eclipse.ui.IPageLayout;
import org.eclipse.ui.IPerspectiveFactory;
import org.eclipse.ui.PlatformUI;
import org.eclipse.ui.console.IConsoleConstants;

public class Perspective implements IPerspectiveFactory {

static int count = 0;

public void createInitialLayout(IPageLayout layout) {

count++;

System.out.println("Perspective.createInitialLayout()");
layout.setEditorAreaVisible(false);

layout.addView("org.taf.ui.view.CatalogueBrowserVw", IPageLayout.LEFT,
0.23f, IPageLayout.ID_EDITOR_AREA);
layout.getViewLayout("org.taf.ui.view.CatalogueBrowserVw")
.setCloseable(false);

IFolderLayout consoleFolder = layout
.createFolder("console", IPageLayout.BOTTOM, 0.65f,
"org.taf.ui.view.CatalogueBrowserVw");

consoleFolder.addView(IConsoleConstants.ID_CONSOLE_VIEW);

if (count == 1) {
PlatformUI.getWorkbench().getActiveWorkbenchWindow()
.getActivePage().resetPerspective();
}
}

If i add the org.eclipse.ui.console to the dependencies, and then run, i get the following error:

!ENTRY org.eclipse.osgi 4 0 2011-04-07 23:41:22.858
!MESSAGE Application error

If those are your errors, then the plugin providing the console view is
not included in your launch config. Go to Run>Run Configurations and
make sure the console plugin is included, and then do a validate to make
sure your launch config is still sane.
