This is a general UML question. I have a diagram which shows processes as circles, and links between processes as IPC message channels. The diagram captures the essentials of the system configuration at run-time - which processes are communicating with whom. UML doesn't seem to have any equivalent - am I missing something here???

You can model processes using State and Activity diagrams. Don't forget that you can not create your own graphical elements but use the standard uml elements defined in the UML 2 specification.
One solution could be to use stereotypes and create your own stereotype icons as circles, or IPC messages which would be added just on the left of the stereotype name which is just above the name of the UML element. Stereotype.
It would do the job and respect a standard UML specification.
