file sharing in ECF [message #624673] Sun, 04 January 2009 16:14 Go to next message

Greetings all,
Sorry if this is easy but I'm struggling to find an answer, so pardon a
n00b question. I've got file sharing working fine over xmpp, using gtalk.
However, at work, our Mordacs have locked the network down like fort knox. I
want to use file sharing with my coworkers, but it looks like xmpp is out of
the question (I don't know how to set up internal xmpp). So I set up ECF
server and can chat back and forth with coworkers. However, using ECF and
not xmpp, the "Share file with" menu option doesn't appear as it does with
xmpp. I can share files, but it just passes an <import...> tag to the
recipient, and that appears to require them to have the the same workspace
setup; otherwise, the file in the import tag isn't recognized.

So here's my simple question: at work, where I can't use gtalk for xmpp, how
can I get arbitrary (i.e. not-in-each-other's-workspaces) file sharing to
work on eclipse 3.4? If there's documentation for this, please point me to
it so I can rtfm.

thanks!

Marc

No worries.

Yes. Direct file sharing in the ECF generic server/client was
previously in place, but removed for security concerns (we run a public
ECF generic server and didn't want to get into all sorts of security
issues with filetransfer).

Adding support for the filetransfer API in the ECF generic host and
client is not a big deal technically, but it is an enhancement that we
haven't done yet.

Would you mind opening an enhancement request with a name like:
'support filetransfer API in collab client/server'. And if you are in a
position to help with such an enhancement please say so, as I'm not sure
how quickly we would be able to get to it during the ECF 3.0 release cycle.

One other thing that is going on in parallel that I should
mention...Remy Suen has used ECF to implement the Eclipse Team API, and
this does automatic real-time synchronization between a pair of
workspaces. I'm not sure if this meets your use case, but it sounds
like it might. We expect to include this work in ECF 3.0M5 (Feb 7) and
beyond.

Thanks,

Scott
