What can I do to make the data tools useful?

When I try to expand a table in the viewer it takes between 15 and 20
minutes to complete. Meanwhile eclipse is stuck hanging (completely
unusable).
Running a simple select take between 20 and 30 seconds.

If I write a simple JDBC class to show the columns in a table, or perform
a select, it runs in a fraction of a second.

There are only about 2 dozen columns in the table.
Is the tool this bad or am I missing some kind of configuration option?

I'm using the Oracle thin driver pointing at a 10g instance if that is
useful
