Not sure if anybody else has had this problem. When looking at the AMW download page (http://www.eclipse.org/gmt/amw/download/) it sounds like the help plug-in (containing the AMW user guide) should form part of the mwplugins-stable.zip. But in fact its' not.

I've spoken to Kelly Garces and she pointed me to the SVN repository: the URL is http://dev.eclipse.org/svnroot/modeling/org.eclipse.gmt.amw

So if you're also looking for the user guide like me, you'll find it here:)
