everything works fine when I compile/run the plugin (e.g., inside a
runtime environment). When I create a feature of that plugin (and some
others) the export complains that the classes of the jar cannot be
instantiated - during compile time or runtime.

ERROR in (at line 51)
import org.a.*;
The import org.a cannot be resolved

I tried to add the jars as extra class entries (jars.extra.classpath =
....) no success.

Any hint?

The short answer is, bundles can only see other bundles.

You need to either 1) turn your 3rd party jar into a plugin, and then
require that/import its packages or 2) put the 3rd party jar in your own
plugin and add it to your manifest bundle-classpath (the Runtime tab in
the PDE editor).
