Hello,

We are trying to implement a GMF editor with several diagram types
(perspectives) that enable the manipulation of the same model. One of
the most demanding things to do is the implementation of two diagram
types (perspectives), which are non orthogonal. By non orthogonal I mean
both diagram types share some nodes and relationships i.e., the semantic
and notation information of one element should be the same in both
diagram types. For example if I move the node in one diagram then the
corresponding node (the same node) in the other diagram should also
change its location.

I am struggling with the implementation of these features already for
many months and I am stumbling upon problems day by day. I would like to
get any comments or suggestions on some key design decision. The right
design decision could probably avoid unnecessary problems.

First of all I am still not sure what the best way is to define my
domain model to get achieve the desired goal. The attached picture
(domainModel.jpg) depicts my current domain model. I decide to connect
both of the shared diagram elements (State and Transition) to both
elements that are represent as the diagram type canvas (Entity and
VrtualDependece), with the aggregation relationship. Is this a good
idea? I did this because I thought that this would be the only way to
get the possibility to add States and Transitions to both diagram types
via the generative GMF component.

The question that arises here is how achieve that one and the same State
or Transition is contained in the Entity and also in the
VirtualDependency semantic element? Because of this issue I had to
decide for one of the following options:

1. For each node and relationship create two semantic copies (one
contained in the Entity and one in the VirtualDependence elements) and
ensure their consistency via the EMF notification mechanisms. In this
satiation both of the copies have their own notational representation
between that we also have to ensure consistence via notification
mechanisms. It seems that there will be a lot work with ensuring the
consistency. And also I seems unnecessary to duplicate the information
(especially in the semantic dimension) to achieve the desired feature.

2. For each node and relationship have just one semantic element and
leave one containment empty (I decided for the containment in
VirtualDependence element) and reference the other in all code. For the
one and only semantic element we than create two copies for the
notational representation, one for each diagram type.

This second option would seem like a better idea and I also started to
implement it, but I have a big problem with it. When I add a new State
element to the 2nd diagram type via the palette then the whole diagram
with the copies of the elements of from the 1st diagram type gets
deleted. Probably because the semantic elements are not really contained
in the VirtualDependence element but are instead referred to from the
Entity containment. Is there any way to bypass this? Otherwise only the
first option is suitable, which seems like overkill.

Any comments and suggestions would be really appreciated.
