But I recommend you to install JDK (development environment)
because without JDK you can not depurate in eclipse.
In summary you have to set the environment vars "PATH" AND "JAVA HOME"
Example
If you installed java in the directory:

/usr/java/jdk-1.5

you have to do:
JAVA_HOME=/usr/java/jdk-1.5
PATH=/usr/java/jdk-1.5/bin
