My perspective has an editor area that initially is not visible (ie.
layout.setEditorAreaVisible(false)). When an edit occurs the editor area
becomes visible. When all editors are closed the editor area stays
visible and blank.

Is there a way to make the editor area not visible again once all editors
are closed?

There is an action, org.eclipse.ui.actions.ActionFactory.SHOW_EDITOR and
a command id = org.eclipse.ui.window.hideShowEditors

There is also (apparently) API on
org.eclipse.ui.IWorkbenchPage.setEditorAreaVisible(boolean)
