How can I hide a complete table in a report if the data set is empty (number of rows = 0)?

Add a column to the table bindings that counts the number of rows. Use
this column in the visibility expression for the table. See attached
example.
for the parameter enter 111 to get no rows or 10101 to get values.

Empty crosstab rows should not display by default. Take a look at this
link:

Another solution could be
http://www.eclipse.org/forums/index.php/mv/msg/208014/890134/#msg_890134,
which doesn't need additional columns/report objects.
