Start Eclipse 3.5 with Java 1.6 on Mac OS 10.5 [message #483530]

Hi

I would like to start Eclipse 3.5 on my Mac OS 10.5 Machine with Java 1.6.
If I try to I get the following error:

eclipse -vm
/System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/1.6.0/C ommands/java
_NSJVMLoadLibrary: NSAddLibrary failed for
/System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/1.6.0/L ibraries/libclient.dylib
JavaVM FATAL: Failed to load the jvm library.
---

I tried it with eclipse-SDK-3.5-macosx-cocoa-x86_64.

PS: Switching to Java 1.5 is not an option. Since I want to test 1.6
specific things.
PSPS: I really want to start Eclipse with 1.6 so switching to 1.6 in the
running Eclipse is not an option.

You didn't say how you set up to run Eclipse in Java 1.6, so I'll tell
you about the ways that I know work:

1) If you don't mind changing the default JVM settings for your entire
system, you can do it in the Java Preferences app (it is in a folder
named Java in the Utilities folder). In that preferences app you can set
the order of JVM versions that you want to be used for Java applications
(make sure to set the one for applications, not just the one for
applets). Also make sure to set the 64-bit JVM as the highest since you
are using Eclipse 64-bit.

2) If you prefer to only run Eclipse in Java6, you should edit the
eclipse.ini file to specify that, as described here:
http://wiki.eclipse.org/Eclipse.ini

thanks for your reply.

I specify the VM with the command line.

If I start it with just: $eclipse everything works fine.

If I start it with:
eclipse -vm
/System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/1.6.0/C ommands/java

I get the errors:
_NSJVMLoadLibrary: NSAddLibrary failed for
/System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/1.6.0/L ibraries/libclient.dylib
JavaVM FATAL: Failed to load the jvm library.

So I suppose setting the VM at a different point should make a difference.

Make sure you've got the right flavor of Eclipse and of the JVM. If you're
using a 64-bit JVM, you'll need to be using 64-bit Cocoa build of Eclipse,
since there's no 64-bit Carbon support; and I don't think there's a 32-bit
Java 1.6 for Mac, so if you're using 1.6 I think you must be 64-bit.
