How to build Equinox from source?

I'm familiar with Maven and Tycho, but I'm not sure where to find the correct sources.

I've cloned git://git.eclipse.org/gitroot/equinox/rt.equinox.framework.git, which references a parent POM org.eclipse:eclipse-parent:1.0.0-SNAPSHOT.

Which Git repo does this parent come from?

The next thing I'm confused about is the use of SNAPSHOT versions even in release tags:

git checkout R4_2_1
cat bundles/org.eclipse.osgi/pom.xml

--> The version is 3.8.0-SNAPSHOT
