Is the Metamodel (type/datamodel) creation of OSEE using Excel sheets due to historical reasons? Are there any plans to change this to a more user-friendly mechanism which includes some validations as well.

Yes, an integrated editor for the OSEE type model is planned and will be worked under your above referenced Bugzilla item.
