trying to use galileo behind corporate firewall, so i go into:
window->preferences->network connections
enter: proxy, port, user and password
for http, https and socks
then i go into:
install/update->available software sites
and i click on an update site, say, "spring ide" for example,
and click "test connection" and it just hangs...
but the analogous actions in ganymede works like a champ
with the same proxy/port/user/password quadruple.
what am i missing...?

I'm not sure its exactly the same issue (I didn't see "hang" mentioned) but
similar issues are being discussed in bug 281472
https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=281472
with some workarounds mentioned there.
And, just FYI, I think we in WTP got out of the "network connections"
are a few releases ago (trying to have single, common function), so
you'd probably
get better response from the eclipse.platform newsgroup (if that bug
doesn't help).
Good luck.
