Hi,
I need some simple JavaScript debugging and editing tools. Saw that
MyEclipse integrates well with Eclipse 3.2.1.
I was wondering if anyone uses MyEclipse and what they think of it???

I've used it in the past and thought it was worth the relatively low
price. My understanding is that it has been quite refined since the
early days when I was a customer.
Having said that, I currently use a combination of free tools for
Javascript development: JSEclipse for editing and Firebug for debugging
(in Firefox). Both of these are excellent tools.
Hope this helps,

It shows how to debug a javascript on webpage referenced by URL.
The ATF framework makes use of Mozilla browser and Eclipse debugger
framework,
so you can put breakpoints like you normally do in java files.

I just downloaded JSEclipse 1.5.5 from their new location at Adobe Labs.
The down load is over 4 meg and is over half filled with Flash documentation.
The JSEclips jar file is 1.7 meg. There are no installation instructions.
I'm scared... I'm actually afraid to install it. I fear Adobe will stick their
fingers into everything I'm doing and mess up a stable Eclipse installation.
Why do they do that kind of stuff?

They use Flash for documentation because it is a richer experience than
plain HTML and Adobe owns Flash. I see no problem nor surprise there.
I don't find a 1.7MB JAR for such a rich plug-in to be excessive.
Fears about Adobe poking their fingers where they don't belong may or
may not be well-founded, but you can always install via the Update
Manager, making sure to install to a separate location outside your main
Eclipse installation. That makes it trivial to disable the plugin via
Manage Configuration, if necessary. The Adobe page for JSEclipse
includes a link to Installation Instructions, via Update Manager.
Hope this helps,

Are you sure? For Firefox 2.0 it is under the Security tab of the
Options dialog.
When you clicked the Install link for Firebug did you see the yellow
alert bar at the top of your browser window (just below the address
bar)? It should have displayed a warning that an add-on was trying to
install.
Hope this helps,

Yeah, I stumbled across this web page that explains how to use the Update Manager.
Worked like a charm. The Update Manager is the only way to install plugins IMHO.
So now I have JSEclipse working just fine -- Thanks a bunch Eric...

Yeah, that's where the error message is -- in the yellow bar at the top.
That's the download page I'm using. I must have something set somewhere that
disables downloading of addons. But I can't find it.
I'm still running 1.5.0.12 and the Security tab is under the Advanced button.
And on the Security tab it asks which SSL to use and how to handle certificates.
I emailed Joe Hewitt -- waiting for a reply.

Well, I figured it out -- here's the email I sent to Joe Hewitt
Hi Joe,
I had Java and Javascript enabled -- that's right -- enabled. And that blocked the installation.
Why????
But then I ran into another problem. I'm running Win2K not XP and you've got it in an
XPInstaller....
What do I do now???

Firefox blocks all add-on installations by default - you have to
specifically allow each domain/site by clicking the "Options" button in
the yellow banner (or by adding the site via Preferences > Security >
Exceptions)
This is a security mechanism, to avoid the mess that IE created years
ago by allowing any site to install executable code without notifying
the user.

It was something else. I had Javascript and Java enabled. I unchecked them
and it at least attempted the install.
Second problem. Firebug comes in an .xpi installer. I'm running Win2K.
Frustrating because I have all the Firebug js stuff but don't know how to install
by hand. I wrote Joe Hewitt....

The .xpi extension has nothing to do with Windows XP - it is just the
name Mozilla uses for add-ons. I just installed Firebug on Win2k and it
worked fine (after I explicitly allowed www.getfirebug.com to install
add-ons).

If I save to disk then try to open it -- naturally nothing happens.
If I Open with Firefox -- nothing happens.
Nothing happens. I give up....
I've written Joe Hewlett twice. No response.
