newsletter - executive director

Welcome back from summer holidays, everyone.

Our team at the Eclipse Foundation has had a very busy summer. Notably, our team has continued working on the transition of our governance to Belgium. As noted in our monthly member newsletter over the summer, we have now filed with the Belgian authorities to establish Eclipse Foundation AISBL as a Belgian-based nonprofit organization, and are actively preparing to begin operations in October.

Concurrently, the Board of Directors has approved changes to the Foundation’s Bylaws and Membership Agreement to enable this transition to occur. We are now in the midst of a vote of the membership at-large, asking all of you to vote in support of these changes. More details on both of these activities is described below.

We have also announced two new working groups since my last update in June. Edge Native and AsciiDoc are each in various stages of becoming operational. I invite you to find out more about all our working groups, here.

Meanwhile, we continue to see healthy growth in both new projects and releases of existing projects. It is the work on projects by our contributors and committers that is at the heart of everything we do, and we are pleased to see this continued momentum.

Finally, a note about COVID-19. On behalf of the Foundation, we want to thank all our members and committers for their continued participation through these challenging times. We hope everyone is remaining safe and healthy.

Thanks, and stay safe!

Mike

Membership Update

I am pleased to report that as of August 31, 2020, we counted 325 members, including 13 Strategic members, as well as 1,624 Committers. The Foundation appreciates the continued support of all members and committers, especially through the on-going COVID-19 crisis.

Financial Update

The Foundation’s Board of Directors approved a revised 2020 budget at its June 2020 Board meeting. The budget includes expected revenues of $6.6M and expected expenditures of $6.6M. The table below shows the recent history of revenues and expenditures for the past few years.

newsletter - member meeting

On August 27 and September 9, Mike Milinkovich and Paul White hosted two virtual Member Town Hall meetings to discuss the impact of the transition to a European-based organization on membership. Using the Crowdcast platform and drawing over 100 attendees combined, these sessions were a great opportunity for candid answers to member questions.

Both sessions are available on the Eclipse Foundation YouTube page. Members interested in obtaining a copy of the deck explaining the changes and impact may access it, here.

newsletter - vote

A vote by the Membership At-Large is now underway. The vote is to approve the recent changes made to the Eclipse Foundation Bylaws and the Eclipse Foundation Membership Agreement, both of which were updated as part of the corporate restructuring mentioned above. The Board of Directors approved these changes at its August 19, 2020, meeting.

Ballots were distributed to all eligible voters on August 31. This includes both Committer Members and the company representative from each Solutions and Strategic member. If you believe you should have received a ballot and did not, please reach out to license@eclipse.org.

All members are urged to vote on this critical matter. As a reminder, these changes must be approved by two-thirds of the membership in order for them to be adopted.

More information regarding the vote can be found, here.

newsletter europe

Our Annual Member Meeting will be virtual this year. For the past number of years, we have held this meeting in person at EclipseCon Europe, but given the conference is virtual this year, we have broken it out to be a virtual meeting.

Mark your calendar and join us on November 3, 2020, beginning at 9:30 EST/15:30 CET.

An agenda and link to the virtual meeting will be sent to all members at a later date.
